The victims, none the wiser, thought the job was “hard-won”—so to thank Qian or avoid failing the exam, they gave him 21 cartons of cigarettes, 6 bottles of liquor, 3,500 yuan in cash, and 1,000 yuan in gift cards.

Months passed, but the promised wages never materialized. When they pressed Qian for answers, he finally confessed: there was no “relative contractor,” no formal job. The group realized they had worked as unpaid laborers for months while also footing the bill for gifts. After reporting it to the police, Qian was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for one year, fined 4,000 yuan, and ordered to return some of the losses—securing the victims’ forgiveness in the process.
