In the winter night of Xi’an in 1901, a high-ranking Grand Councilor struggled in his own hall for over ten hours, refusing to draw his last breath. It wasn’t that he feared death, but he clung to a faint, unrealistic hope—that a pardon might suddenly arrive from above.

This minister was Zhao Shuqiao, a native of Chang’an in Shaanxi, renowned for his mastery of the law and exonerating the wrongly accused, earning him the title “Zhao the Blue Sky.” Throughout his life, he was upright and dared to punish corrupt officials, yet at a critical moment, out of fear of his superiors and a desire to please the powerful, he made a fateful mistake.

During the Boxer Rebellion, Zhao had personally investigated and concluded that the Boxers’ techniques were unreliable. However, under pressure, he ultimately reported the eight characters: “Their techniques are usable, and the people’s hearts can be relied upon.” This statement not only hastened the invasion of the Eight-Nation Alliance but also placed him on the list of “chief culprits” demanded by the foreign powers.

From swallowing gold and opium in the morning to being forced arsenic in the evening, Zhao writhed in agony, repeatedly muttering “Gangyi has doomed me.” He stared fixedly at the hall door, hoping for a miracle. As night deepened and candles burned out, no sound of hooves came from outside.

His wife, who had been kneeling silently by his side, finally leaned over and whispered the words that changed everything: “My lord, have a safe journey. Your concubine will follow soon after.”

Those words seemed to drain his last remaining strength. Zhao no longer stared stubbornly at the door but turned to his wife, his throat moving slightly, and soon closed his eyes peacefully. His wife later hanged herself to follow him, creating a tragic yet profoundly beautiful tale of marital devotion.
