I always thought everyone was watching me.

I went to a coffee shop. I ordered a coffee and walked to my seat with my friend. I felt like I was overreacting because it seemed like everyone was staring at me. I worried I was doing something wrong or had something on my face.

However, as I sat in that coffee shop, a sudden realization hit me. I looked up from my lap and scanned the room. The woman at the corner table was buried in her laptop, her brow furrowed in concentration.

Once I embraced this reality, the weight of the world lifted off my shoulders. I began to realize that the spotlight effect is an illusion created by our own egos. If nobody is truly watching, then I am free to make mistakes. I am free to be a beginner at the gym without shame. I am free to write poorly until I learn to write well.

When you stop worrying about the imaginary judgments of strangers, you finally have the energy to focus on the person who actually matters: yourself.
