How to Read One Book Per Week

Reading more books is one of the best investments you can make in your life.

Every book you read increases your knowledge and motivation and, contrary to popular opinion, makes it more likely you’ll take action.

Last year, I read 105 books.

I have some advantages that helped me hit this number: reading is part of my job, I’ve already read a lot and, while I don’t speed read, I do read at a decent pace.

But even if you don’t have those advantages, I do believe that anyone can read one book per week if they make it a goal and put in the effort.

To that end, I’d like to offer eight strategies that have worked for me:

  1. Always have a book. Preferably a good one.

You can’t read a book you don’t have. We have at our fingertips an inescapable flood of videos, news, text messages and social media posts.

But for most of us, the number of books within arm’s reach that we’re genuinely excited to read is usually zero.

  1. Use multiple formats —— pocket, phone, and ears.

Reading doesn’t have to live on a single device. I listen to audiobooks for long walks, commute time or house chores; I switch to an e-book on the subway; and I save paper for relaxing, slow evenings.

Combining formats means you can “read” while doing things you already do, and those extra minutes add up fast.

  1. Preview and triage quickly.

Before committing to a full read, spend five to ten minutes previewing the book: skim the table of contents, introduction, a couple of sample pages, and the conclusion.

If the book isn’t delivering what you expected, give yourself permission to stop. One of the most liberating habits for reading more is ruthlessly choosing what deserves your time.

  1. Break books into time-sized chunks.

A 300-page book split across seven days is just ~43 pages a day- very doable if you break it into two or three 20-30 minute sessions.

I schedule a morning session, a lunch break read, and a short wind-down before bed.

Treat those sessions like meetings: put them on your calendar and honor them.
